The most commonly reported symptoms have included nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, which are minor. Some pets may also suffer from loss of appetite, hair loss, lesions, mental confusion, and jaundice. If you observe more severe reactions like facial hives, swelling of the lips or tongue and difficulty breathing, immediately discontinue use and contact your veterinarian, as these may be signs of an allergic reaction.
Do not give Doxycycline to pregnant or nursing pets. Do not give multivitamins, calcium supplements, antacids, or laxatives within 2 hours before or after giving this medication, as these products can reduce the effectiveness of Doxycycline. Doxycycline may make a pet's skin more sensitive to sunlight and sunburn may occur. Throw away any unused medication when it expires or when it is no longer needed. Expired Doxycycline can cause a dangerous syndrome that can result in damage to the kidneys.
Should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
Be sure to keep plenty of water readily available while your pet is taking this medication, as hydration helps prevent some side effects from occurring.
Give as directed by your veterinarian. Follow the instructions printed on the prescription label. Store doxycycline at room temperature. Be sure to complete the prescription to ensure a full recovery, even if your pet seems to be improving, unless instructed otherwise by your veterinarian. Allow your pet access to plenty of water. Doxycycline can be given with or without food but should not be given with dairy products.
